Teeth whitening treatments at our practice can make your teeth up to 10 shades brighter and the treatment is incredibly straightforward; whether we perform it chairside or provide you with whitening trays and gels to use at home.
If you have a busy lifestyle and you would like to have fast results then chair side rapid bleaching is probably the best option for you. The appointment usually takes around 2 hours and you will leave the practice with a brighter, whiter smile. After a thorough teeth cleaning, a powerful bleaching gel made from concentrated peroxide is applied to the yellow or stained teeth. This strong dental gel slowly dissolves stains and contaminants that are attached to the teeth. If teeth are sensitive after the procedure, a special fluoride paste can be applied to reduce sensitivity or discomfort.
After your chairside bleaching treatment your dentist will give you whitening trays and gels to take home to give you the best possible results.
This type of teeth whitening requires two visits to your dentist. At your first appointment, impression moulds will be made of your teeth, from which we will create your custom made, clear plastic bleaching trays. At your follow up appointment, the bleaching trays will be fitted, and any adjustments made. You will be given instructions on how to use this home whitening system and care for your teeth and bleaching trays. Then you simply wear the trays containing a special teeth whitening solution overnight for a couple of weeks, or twice daily for two hours, depending on the level of staining and degree of teeth whitening you are aiming to achieve. Some people experience a degree of tooth sensitivity during this period, however this will subside shortly after you complete the teeth bleaching process.
Over the counter whitening gels are not of the same strength and quality as from your dentist. Additionally, the tray made by your dentist is custom made and fits your teeth like a personal retainer. A tray you make yourself from a kit may leak gel into your mouth and allow saliva into the gel reducing its effectiveness and can even damage your gums. The effects of gel bleaching can last for several months, but may vary depending on your lifestyle. Tooth whitening is not a permanent procedure, especially if you smoke, or drink tea, coffee, or wine. In order to maintain your smile we recommend that you schedule a maintenance appointment as you become aware of deterioration in the brightness of your smile.
Q. Am I a suitable candidate for teeth whitening?
A. Generally speaking most people are suitable for teeth whitening treatment on their own natural teeth, as the results will be consistent and predictable. But, if you have dental restorations like crowns, fillings or veneers in place, these will not whiten, and the results of the whitening may vary.
Q. Can the whitening treatment damage your teeth?
A. We have treated numerous patients with our teeth whitening service over the years with a very high patient satisfaction and success rate. Additionally, with the dentist administered industry standard products that we use, it has been tested and proven extensively that there are no side affects to the tooth enamel or nerves.
Q. How long will my tooth whitening treatment last?
A. This very much depends on your lifestyle and eating habits, for example those who expose their teeth to food and drink products that have a reputation for staining, along with people who smoke will dramatically cut the length of time the teeth whitening lasts. One of the benefits of the custom tray system we use, is that you can keep topping up the peroxide, to maintain your new whiter smile.
