Dental Bridges in Wickford

Bridges – A bridge is a device used to fill the space where a tooth has fallen out or been removed. A typical bridge consists of a pontic (a filler tooth) that is attached to two surrounding abutments (crowns). Once complete, this bridge structure is bonded into the mouth. Without the use of a bridge, spaces in the mouth from missing teeth can cause multiple teeth to shift, lead to occlusion (biting) and/or jaw problems and spur periodontal disease.

Implant Supported Bridge

An implant-supported bridge is used when more than one tooth is missing. It also may be used if there is a concern that you might put too much pressure on individual implants that are not connected to each other. Pressure on individual implants increases the chances that they will loosen from the bone and fail. An implant-supported bridge reduces the pressure on the individual implants in the bone, and spreads it across the entire bridge.

Dental bridges offer the best method of improving smiles by fixing gaps or replacing missing teeth. Missing teeth can cause a change in bite, movement of the teeth, speech impediments, TMJ, an increased risk of periodontal disease and a greater chance of tooth decay. Bridges span the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or dental implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, serve as anchors for the bridge. A replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges.
